Supporting Educators Across Alpine District

Tomorrow, October 6th, schools and district departments across Alpine School District will celebrate National Instructional Coaches Appreciation Day to honor all types of instructional coaches for their dedication to classroom success.

These essential educators collaborate daily with teachers, administrators, and school teams in every ASD school to refine instructional strategies and enhance learning outcomes for all students.

To support students and teachers effectively, ASD utilizes distinct coaching roles that work together to strengthen classroom instruction. Professional Learning Community (PLC) coaches guide teacher teams through data analysis, curriculum alignment, and targeted student interventions. Innovative Learning Coaches (ILCs) help teachers integrate educational technology meaningfully into daily learning. Additionally, multilingual learner coaches support language acquisition strategies, special education coaches ensure individualized support and compliance, and secondary content specialists deepen subject-area instruction.

"Knowing that we can count on them to do what they're doing, it takes a huge burden off the principal's and assistant principal's plates," said Ruthie Cheeseman, assistant principal at Grovecrest Elementary. Cheeseman highlighted the unique impact coaches have across school buildings, adding, "there is a level of trust that they have with teachers that teachers don't necessarily have with administrators. And so, being there to bridge gaps and actually provide a different kind of support to teachers is so instrumental, and it takes a huge burden off our plates. And so, I'm super grateful for that."

Comprehensive Coaching and Leadership Impact

This collaborative trust between coaches and educators translates directly into real academic results and stronger instruction in the classroom. "Their role is an instructional leader, and so they're there to help support the teachers with their data, their curriculum, filling in gaps, understanding what they need to do to be teaching in order to meet students where they're at," Cheeseman said.

Dr. Vallen Thomas, Director of Educational Services expresses appreciation for ASD instructional coaches saying “I am deeply grateful for the dedication, insight, and steady support they bring to our schools every single day. The impact of their hard work ripples through our teachers and classrooms, making a profound difference in the lives of our students - we appreciate everything they do!”

Enhancing Classroom Technology and Instruction

In addition to curriculum support, coaches guide teachers in utilizing classroom technology purposefully to enhance learning rather than replace effective teaching practices. Cheeseman explained that ILCs step in wherever needed to troubleshoot and support educators, helping ensure technology acts as a meaningful teaching tool. She noted that ILCs work to "support teachers in how they use it, so that it's not just like, 'We're putting kids on a Chromebook all day.'"

According to Cheeseman, an ILC's focus is on helping teachers implement digital tools as a true extension of classroom instruction. "They help them implement technology into their classroom as an enhancement rather than a replacement of the teacher," Cheeseman emphasized.

Fostering Collaborative Learning and Growth

Secondary educators also rely on instructional coaches as trusted thought partners to refine their daily instruction and teaching strategies. Thor Labrum, a first-year teacher at Skyridge High School, meets regularly with his instructional coaches to brainstorm ideas and implement new teaching strategies.

Labrum shared "They help me create models that my students can use, and have also helped me come up with ideas for classroom management." adding, "They help me come up with a solid implementation for teaching practices and theories that I'm learning."

Through collaborative learning and constant support, instructional coaches foster an environment across the district where both teachers and students thrive.

"I appreciate how they're always available to chat and bounce ideas off of," Labrum said. He expressed, "I am grateful for the culture and environment they put around collaborative learning as teachers."

By investing in continuous teacher growth and collaborative partnerships, Alpine School District reinforces its enduring commitment to a culture of excellence for all students.

Thank you Alpine Instructional coaches for all you do to move forward the learning that happens in every Alpine school!
